About the team
This is an important leadership role working in The Digital Performance and Planning team for DWP digital. You will lead a team in the central planning team and have leadership of a broader proactive community, taking responsibility for areas of risk and audit.
The Digital Performance and Planning team leads the business management service across Digital Group in DWP to ensure the successful delivery of our business plan. You’ll play an important role in our digital transformation, helping ensure our skilled technologists put transformed products and services into the hands of the people that need them most.
We set the overall business management strategies and ensure the effective management of Risk, Audit, Group level finance, workforce planning, business planning and performance management
About your role
This role is part of the leadership team of the Performance and Planning function for Digital Group. In addition to leading the Risk, Audit and Compliance team within the central Performance and Planning Team, you will also be working closely with colleagues in our functional Business Management teams, introducing new ways of working to ensure consistency and best practice.
As a Lead Digital Business Performance & Planning Manager you will be integral in informing and shaping new ways of working across Digital Group, leading specifically on Strategic Risks, Internal Audit and Compliance. This is a high profile role supporting Digital Group Executive Team members to achieve Digital’s Strategic outcomes
You will also manage the relationship with our internal audit agency, and will be expected to manage that relationship and understand the risk and control framework across digital. As planning manager you will draw out from the process what the results are and will set direction for the team of how we manage risk across DWP digital .
You will also lead the professionalization of the Business Management Job Family and wider Business Services Practice, assisting the Head of Role to build capability by coaching, identifying training and setting standards and frameworks.
Other Duties include:
- Working closely with Digital Leads to ensure strategic and functional risks are actively identified, managed and reported across Digital Group to deliver desired outcomes.
- Providing regular updates to the Digital Executive Team, prompting and shaping senior risk conversations ensuring alignment with DWP Departmental risk management activities.
- Building and maintaining relationships with audit delivery partners to ensure successful delivery and implementation of audit recommendations.
- Leading and supporting Senior Management and Digital Directors in interdepartmental and external discussions relating to Digital Audits.
- Considering, understanding and analysing large amounts of information, summarising into key points to share with a range of audiences, providing regular focused reports which add insight to inform senior decision making.
- Unblocking multiple complex projects, programmes and Senior Executive structures.
- Developing, designing and communicating processes across Digital Group, embedding standardised Business Management processes in each Digital Function focusing on Risk Management, Audit and Compliance.
What are we looking for?

- Leadership experience, including introducing and embedding new ways of working both in own team and across wider professional family.
- Ability to analyse data, draw conclusions, make recommendations and credibly present information in order to influence and persuade board members to take action or make decisions.
- Experience of working across professional boundaries within a diverse senior stakeholder environment.
- Ability to effectively manage relationships with external partners such as Government Internal Audit Agency (GIAA) and National Audit Office (NAO).
- Experience of Risk Management in a large organisation at Group level.
- Previous experience of working within a large Digital organisation or demonstrable understanding of how large Digital organisations operate in the context of this role.
