DWP Digital With Purpose
Security Data Science own significant cyber security analytics work. They are responsible for developing the sophistication and accuracy of our underlying analytics capability in tackling a range of security risks. Day-to-day their skills combine those of both typical researcher, analyst and programmer – with the ability to develop repeatable procedures in code combined with deep contextual data analysis. They drive the use of complex techniques such as machine learning to model, map and programmatically analyse the behaviour of complex entities such as users, devices, and attackers.
Applicants must pass standard security checks and be eligible for SC clearance at minimum. However, they are not expected to hold it before applying. DWP can aid in all stages of the vetting process for successful candidates.
What will I be doing?
Ideally what we are looking for a deeply technical analytical data driven individual, who can simulate and use the mind-set of a Cyber attacker to detect real threats to security and the public good. Ultimately a deep understanding of how these attacks would be articulated into real security threats and what that defence strategy could be deployed in prevention or response in achieving a useful outcome in a measured way can be communicated and translatable.
An experienced Senior Data Scientist to own significant cyber security analytics work and to act as a proactive link between operational, technical and analytical teams. They will need to be motivated to discover patterns in data and able to embed that insight in ways that enable the detection of attacks and prevention of cyber security incidents.
The Department is a major contributor to transforming government security and data science is recognised as having a critical role to play. Not only is that in the better design of our services but also making them more personalised for each individual’s circumstances and making big shifts in our effectiveness and efficiency.
Cyber Security data science specialists will be responsible for the sophistication and accuracy of our underlying analytics capability in tackling a range of security risks.
Responsibilities
The role requires the successful candidate to own and lead on projects including:
• Identification and monitoring of known security risks to DWP systems and data, and work with stakeholders to design the cost effective response(s)
• Proactive use of data science techniques, data sources and technology to discover anomalies, assess capability, and analyse security data in new ways
• Modelling, mapping, and programmatically analysing the behaviour of complex entities such as users, devices, and attackers
• Inputting into the design and implementation of wider protective monitoring and response capabilities
• Collaborative working with a wide group of business and technical stakeholders
• Creation, development and advancement of the underlying data science capability in terms of the different techniques and model development
• Recruitment and development of the right skills mix across data science, data engineering and business community
• Engaging with relevant teams and peers in DWP, other Government Depts. and others such as industry and academia
• Ensuring all activities align to business value in keeping DWP system and data secure whilst adhering to key privacy, security and data protection principles
Essential Criteria
The ideal candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Experience in building and optimising innovative, security analytics solutions on large or complex data sets
• Experience using techniques such as data visualisation, anomaly detection, machine learning or real time decisioning
• Hands on experience with the data typically available to information security teams in an enterprise environment and a deep understanding of how the systems providing this data operate
• Understanding of potential attacker behaviour and malware activity
• Awareness of the latest technology trends in the cyber and analytics domain and their relative merits
• Confident public speaker, used to delivering complex insights in a compelling and succinct way tailored to the audience
• Experience using products such as Splunk, Arcsight, Logrhythm or AlienVault
• Hands-on experience with various analytics, anomaly detection, or data visualisation products available on the cyber security market
• Experience modelling the complex activity of security-related entities (e.g. users, devices)
Also great to have but not mandatory..
* GIAC, GMON or other equivalent information security qualifications.

National salary (Leeds) for this role is from £47,971 up to £58,135. Where the maximum salary is offered a digital allowance up to £9,961 is available.
London Salary for this role is from £52,748 up to £63,079. Where the maximum salary is offered a digital allowance up to £5.017 is available.
