You and your role
As Head of Role for our Software Engineering practice you will be expected to provide leadership for our thriving Engineering community.
You’ll be leading a dedicated, buzzy community of developers and engineers already over 250 strong and growing. They’re doing work, and writing code, that will transform the way we deliver products and services to the millions of people, including some of our society’s most vulnerable. You will take them to the next level.
You will set the standards that the community aspire to, lead on performance management and resourcing to maximise capability, utility, and impact. You’ll lead and manage our people to deliver their best by determining how our community develops, what we do and how we do it.
You’ll take charge of developing and articulating a vision for the Software Engineering job family in DWP Digital Group. You’ll also work with the Cross Government Digital, Data and Technology Profession (DDaT) to ensure a consistent strategic direction.
The role will also include actively networking in both public and private sectors. You’ll share take a lead role at high-profile events, sharing knowledge, stories and scars, building our profile, and keeping on the edge of latest developments.
What are we looking for?
Programming and Build:
- You set local or team-based standards for programming tools and techniques and the selection of appropriate development methods.
- You advise on application of standards and methods and ensures compliance.
- You take technical responsibility for all stages and/or iterations in a software development project, providing method specific technical advice and guidance to project stakeholders.
Modern Standards Approach:
- You have a strong understanding of and ability to apply the most appropriate modern standards and practices.
- You are comfortable collaborating, coaching and guiding others.
Systems Design:
- You control systems design practice within an enterprise or industry architecture.
- You influence industry-based models for the development of new technology applications. You develop effective implementation and procurement strategies, consistent with business needs.
- You ensure adherence to relevant technical strategies, policies, standards and practices.
Systems Integration:
- You establish standards and procedures across the IT service lifecycle (including the development lifecycle) in the areas of systems integration and testing and ensure that practitioners adhere to them.
- You manage resources to ensure that the systems integration function operates effectively.
Where You’ll Work
You’ll join us in one of our easy-to-reach digital hubs in either Leeds, Blackpool, Manchester, or London. Each site hosts a modern, vibrant workplace where provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things.
We have great facilities inside, including pool and gym facilities, coffee shops, restaurants, ping pong and more (including a dentist), and outside we have the best of London, Leeds and Manchester on our doorstep. You will not be stuck for lunch options. In Blackpool, we’re less central but we share a beautiful site with wild birds, rabbits and, in the pond, koi carp. The view out of the window is not bad.
