Job description

If you’re creative and curious, want to be empowered to make decisions and challenge the norm, and want to bring BIG ideas to a MASSIVE digital challenge then you’ll love it here. And we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for talented Programme Manager with knowledge and experience of Agile to join our growing community of experts and become a key part of one of the biggest and highest-profile digital transformation programmes in the world.

As an Agile Programme Manager, you will lead delivery of a major product development programme within DWP. Your role covers agile, in-house, cross-functional delivery leadership for software development, user centred design, business operational process design and policy enhancement.

This is a critical role for us working on the delivery of one of DWP’s flagship digital projects. A unique programme management opportunity, genuinely at the cutting edge of how things are done anywhere in DWP and across government, your work will be critical to a project that will touch around 10 million households in the UK. It is as big a job as you can get in this space.

You and your role

You have a strong, deep knowledge of agile tools and techniques as well as experience bringing clarity, visibility and coherence to complex projects and programmes. In this role you’ll have responsibility for multi-site delivery of Universal Credit, working across Leeds, Manchester and London, and with a specific for the growth of the Manchester team and the hub we work in.

You’ll manage a complex programme of inter-relating projects, and multi-disciplinary agile project teams. You’ll cover upwards of 7 teams, and up to 10 products and associated sub-products.

You should have worked in a consumer-facing, user-centric role, for example in retail, rather than in a B2B role. An agile expert, you will have programme management experience at some significant scale. This could be managing a programme of software projects or similar. Ideally you’ll understand how tech projects and programmes tick and how to make them work.

The scale, profile importance, impact and complexity of this programme means that we see this as a great opportunity for a skilled Agile programme to develop and take a step toward a future CIO or Chief Digital Officer role.

What are we looking for?

Where You’ll Work

You’ll join us in one of city centre hubs in either Leeds or Manchester.

In our brilliant new digital hub in Manchester on St Peter’s Square, we’re really handy for the train and the tram, and we have the best of the city on our doorstep with loads of great options nearby for lunch and for an after work social and great views over the Town Hall and Central Library.

Leeds is one of our best established hubs with some of our biggest and best project teams. We have great facilities onsite including a restaurant and swimming pool, and just round the corner there is great shopping and streetfood at Kirkgate market.

On each site you’ll find a modern, vibrant workplace that was designed for and by members of our digital community. Here we provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things.

You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers. We’re the UK’s biggest government department with over 80,000 diverse and brilliant people on our team. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.

Our Offer

In return for your skills we offer competitive salary up to £81,265, a brilliant civil service pension with contributions of about 22%, and a generous leave package starting at 25 days (plus public holidays)

We also have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:

Building Our Future

We believe the work we do really matters, so we’re serious about investing in your ability.

You’ll have access to a huge suite of training and learning opportunities to complement the new skills and experience you’ll acquire on the job. You’ll share ideas with colleagues from across the tech community, and grow your skills via our coaching and mentoring programmes.
