Job description
Do you want to be part of something really big? If you’re creative and curious to learn, want to be empowered to make decisions and challenge the norm, and want to bring BIG ideas to a MASSIVE digital challenge then you’ll love it here. And we’d love to hear from you.
DWP are looking for skilled Site Reliability Engineers to work with us on in a once-in-a-generation digital transformation. Our people work on projects that will revolutionise products and services used by millions of people every day.
We know that better digital services in government will mean better public services. Using fresh ideas and leading edge technologies – and putting the user at the centre of everything we do – we create innovative digital solutions that make a difference to the lives of our 22 million users.
You and your role
We’re looking for Lead and Senior Site Reliability Engineers to join our thriving Engineering community. You’ll need skills in AWS Cloud, Terraform and an appreciation of legacy technologies and you’ll understand and be able to embed SRE best practice.
Our SRE practice combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. Scripting to automate and design out failures before they happen, you’ll create ultra-scalable, ultra-reliable systems for DWP.
Here you will work with the application, infrastructure and database developers to increase reliability and reduce down time and uptime targets. You’ll ensure that DWP’s critical and highly visible services maintain reliability and uptime so that we can continue to deliver products and services to millions of people in the UK, including some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
As an SRE you will be responsible for continuous improvement, while maintaining application capacity and performance. You will devise and implement optimisations and automations that reduce technical debt; reduce operational costs and risks; automate toil; and improve the quality of the application code. We make sure that our SREs are involved from the initial application idea all the way through the application lifecycle to decommissioning.
You might be an experienced software engineer, with some helpful consultancy background, able to apply software engineering techniques to solve IT Operations and Infrastructure problems. Or you could be working in DevOps or SRE now, looking for a new challenge with real scale, purpose and complexity. You’ll find that here, along with a huge, diverse portfolio of projects and programmes with the power to improve the lives of real people.
What are we looking for
- You are passionate about improving internal processes.
- You understand security engineering and security best practice.
- You can architect and administer scalable, cloud-native and on-premise applications.
- You have good time management, and change management skills.
- You’re a great communicator and collaborator across multiple stakeholder types.
- You are skilled, knowledgeable and able in your field. You can modify and maintain systems and code developed by other engineers.
- You are a great leader of engineers, with experience in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment, delivering products within specific timescales
- You can set, communicate, implement, and achieve business objectives and goals through direct management.
Where You’ll Work
You’ll join us in one of our easy-to-reach digital hubs in Blackpool, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield.
Each of our hubs is modern, vibrant workplace, designed for and by members of our community. In many locations we have the best of the city of our doorstep, and we have a range of facilities across the sites including cafes, coffee shops and restaurants, gym facilities and lots more. Get in touch to find out more about your preferred location.
We provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things. You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers.
We’re the UK’s biggest government department with over 80,000 diverse and brilliant people on our team. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.
Our Offer
In return for your skills we offer competitive salary up to £78,605, a brilliant civil service pension, and a generous leave package.
We also have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:
