We’re looking for an Engineer – Infrastructure Operations (Network & Telecommunications), to work with us on one of the largest transformation programmes in Europe.

As an Engineer within Infrastructure Operations (Network & Telecommunications) in BPDTS, you’ll be working with a wide range of tools and technologies such as TCP/IP routing protocols, including OSPF and BGP, network services like DNS, DHCP as well as server virtualisation techniques NFV, SDN and SD-WAN

ABOUT YOU AND YOUR ROLE

As an Engineer working in Infrastructure Operations (Network & Telecommunications), you will be part of a wider team who are critical in supporting and maintaining the infrastructure across the DWP estate. This in turn allows DWP users to provide services to millions of vulnerable UK citizens.

You and your team will be responsible to ensure these are kept online and running as they affect thousands of DWP users, who in turn provide services to millions of vulnerable UK citizens.

You will be energetic with a positive outlook and have the ability to motivate yourself as well as your colleagues in the team through challenging times. We have a great team spirit here, and you’ll add to that.
You are technically gifted with an investigative way of thinking and enjoy the challenge of getting stuck into issues to find out why things aren’t working.

You are someone who is able to work under pressure and accustomed to change. Your strong technical background will allow to learn and picks up skills fast. You will have extensive experience within an infrastructure server support role in the past as well as experience of leading a team.

YOUR ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Experience of network security products and countermeasure techniques, including firewalls, Virtual Private Networks (VPN’s), encryption and authentication techniques
• Knowledge in TCP/IP routing protocols, including OSPF and BGP
• Knowledge in common network services, including Directory Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Network Time Protocol (NTP), and load-balancing techniques

• Knowledge of Cisco data-centre products, including ACI and Cisco CCNP/CCDP certification or equivalent experience/skills
• Knowledge of server virtualisation techniques, Network Functions Virtualised (NFV), Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Software Defined WAND (SD-WAN) Awareness of next generation firewalls/application firewalls

You’ll join us in one of our digital hubs in either Newcastle or Manchester. We provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multi-disciplinary teams think big and try new things.
In Newcastle we’re really close to Longbenton Metro station. It’s a great site with loads of cool facilities, like our gym, our indoor sports court, our great restaurants, cafes and snack bars and loads more. It’s a really collaborative, friendly place where we host regular events and meet ups.

In Manchester we have the best of the city on our doorstep, with loads of great places nearby to meet, eat or to soak up a bit of culture. We have brilliant views over St Peter’s Square, looking out over Central Library and the Town Hall. We’re really handy for the train and the tram, and we have a basement level lock up (with showers) for your bike.
