Job description

If you’re creative and curious to learn, want to be empowered to make decisions and challenge the norm, and want to bring BIG ideas to a MASSIVE digital challenge then you’ll love it here. And we’d love to hear from you.

We’re looking for talented Interaction Designers to join our growing community of experts and become a key part of one of the biggest and highest-profile digital transformation programmes in the world.

Using fresh ideas and leading edge technologies – and putting the user at the centre of everything we do – we create innovative digital solutions that make a difference to the lives of our 22 million users.

You and your role
We are looking for individuals who can support the delivery of artefacts and interaction design. You’ll be working alongside researchers and developers to deliver DWP services, products and tools which fulfil user needs.

A strong understanding of all the elements of interaction design is absolutely key as well as experience of working in multidisciplinary teams in an agile environment to turn concepts into user-centred designs.

You will be interested in developing the design practice and will be comfortable managing small teams whilst also feeding into the larger team.

Your role on a day to day basis will be about creating and iterating prototypes to test and communicate ideas and help the wider team learn about user needs.

You will be required to show your understanding of as-is interaction design as well as identifying improvement opportunities, using typography and affordance to always be striving to improve the user experience.

Read this great blog from Mikey Cattell (a current Senior Interaction Designer here at DWP Digital) about why he feels that working here and designing ‘for the people’ and delivering things that are needed is making a positive difference.

What are we looking for?
We are seeking those who have:
• Some experience of sketching, prototyping and iterative design.
• Some experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
• Some experience of using a user-centred design approach.
• Some experience of explaining design decisions and communicating ideas clearly.
• Some experience of working at pace in an agile environment.
• Some experience of putting forward the case for design to senior stakeholders and product owners.

Where You’ll Work
You’ll join us in one of our easy-to-reach digital hubs in Leeds, Newcastle or Blackpool.

Each of our hubs is a modern, vibrant workplace that was designed for and by members of our digital community. Get in touch to learn more about what we offer in your preferred location.

We provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things. You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers.

We’re the UK’s biggest government department with over 80,000 diverse and brilliant people on our team. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.
