Job description
BPDTS. Digital People.
We are looking for Software Engineers to join our Integration team in Newcastle.
BPDTS Ltd provides dedicated services to the Department for Work and Pensions. Our digital, data and technology specialists work closely with experts in DWP Digital’s community to make digital services quicker, simpler and more efficient for the millions of people that use them.
In BPDTS our people are our biggest asset. We harness and develop their expertise so we can design, build and run secure and intuitive digital services used by 20 million UK citizens, often during critical times in their lives.
What will I be working on?
On the Integration Team we are accountable for the critical assets which allow DWP systems to communicate and share information. Our agile multi-disciplinary squads work collaboratively with stakeholders in DWP and beyond to enable DWP’s digital transformation to an API and events-driven architecture.
We implement file transfers, messaging capabilities and APIs. Our assets and services mean DWP can share data with over 600 external partners – including other government departments, local authorities, utility companies, insurance providers and job search partners.
The scale of what we do is massive, and the context unique.
We support 23 million people at key times in their lives; ensuring children are financially supported; older people are supported in retirement, and working age people are supported through ill health, disability and unemployment.
The Integration API Gateway processes over 150 million API calls every month. We expect this to rise to over 300 million a month in the next 12 months. We also handle the release of around £300 billion of payments a year; that’s around £1 billion paid every day.
And our work has probably never been more important than right now. During the initial phases of COVID-19 we received over 2.5 million additional claims to universal credit; a ten-fold increase in a 3-week period.
What skills are we looking for?
- Recent experience working with Java 8 (or newer)
- Knowledge and experience developing APIs, RESTful services and microservice architectures, and an understanding of appropriate utilisation
- Experience working with distributed version control systems such as Git
- Experience of software engineering best practices, including a good understanding of TDD & BDD alongside the use of automated test frameworks
- Experience of leading engineers in a complex, multi-disciplinary, agile environment. You will be comfortable delivering products while working alongside multiple senior stakeholders and co-ordinating build, test and deploy activities across systems
- Ability to identify opportunities to optimise the software development process
