Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We’re hiring a Lead Content Designer to join DWP Digital at an exciting, challenging time in our digital transformation. We have a clear vision – to design the department’s services around the people who need them – and we’re looking for talented people to help us achieve it.

Putting users’ needs at the heart of your work, you’ll be a champion for designing around their needs, making sure people’s interactions with government are as simple and quick as possible.

Playing an active leadership role in the Content Design team, you will provide leadership at programme level to understand users’ behaviour and use evidence to help improve existing services.

Using your experience of large-scale and complex content projects, you’ll assure the quality of content design across teams and its alignment to departmental goals. Using research, data and other evidence, you’ll translate user needs into content strategy across end-to-end services (including non-digital parts).

Ideally, you are someone who has experience of sharing content ideas quickly through sketching or prototyping and are recognised as an industry specialist or expert capable of giving significant advice and guidance to others going forward.

Having experience of sharing your work both inside and outside the content design community you currently work in would be extremely advantageous (for example, by writing or speaking about your work publicly), as is and ability to manage other people’s work, including planning work and checking it to make sure it’s consistent and appropriate across products and services.

Duties. Work. Projects.
Working with the Head of Content Design in leading on the development of the content design community within the department and across the government, you will be setting the hiring strategy for the content design team and leading on those recruitment campaigns

You’ll strongly advocate for best practice in content design, leading on the development of the department’s style guide and content standards, plus the creation and maintenance of a positive and collaborative working environment.

Helping to shape content career paths by managing our Senior Content Designers, plus on occasions deputising for the Head of Content Design, you’ll work with senior stakeholders to help to build teams, solve problems and develop strategy.

There are some challenges that we hope you’re ready to tackle – especially around persuading senior stakeholders of the value of user-centred content design. It’s important and rewarding work

What skills, knowledge and experience are we looking for?

Plenty of hands-on content design experience

An evidence-based approach to content design

Experience of setting strategy
