Job description

Looking for a new and exciting challenge?

Are you someone who can take a leading role in making digital services quicker, simpler and more efficient for millions of people who use them every day?

Then we have a great opportunity awaiting you if:-

YOU are an IxD with recent experience of working from a digital perspective as well as sketching, prototyping and iterative design.

YOU are an IxD with proven ability to handle constructive criticism of your work whilst constructively reviewing others.

YOU are an IxD who relishes the thought of working in a multi-disciplinary team and using a user-centred design approach.

We are looking for Interaction Designers with significant recent experience in the role behind them (or those with relevant skills in the workplace following the completion of a college degree course) who are looking to make that leap to Mid-weight IxD.

You’ll fit right in if you want to use your skills to make a positive difference to other people’s lives by helping to design the way the welfare system interacts with all, using the most modern UX design environments, tools and latest technologies.

Learn more about the team and what we do on a day to day basis from the blogs of those actually undertaking this huge challenge right now:

Craig Abbot

AND

Re-using and iterating our services through interaction design

ABOUT YOU
As an Interaction Designer you will be able to demonstrate an understanding of user needs and design services (including interfaces and transaction flows) that meet them.

You will have a credible track record of defining elements – layout, design patterns, controls, actions and visual priorities (what needs to be obvious, what needs to be easy, and what needs to be made possible).

You’ll thrive creating and rapidly iterating prototypes to help the wider team learn about user needs for different scenarios or tasks.

You will be willing to roll up your sleeves to play an active part in the department’s Product Design community.

You will be comfortable working in a cross-functional team to turn concepts into user-centred services.

You will ideally have a design-related degree and experience of working on designs with a software engineer

Where You’ll Work
You’ll join us in one of our easy-to-reach digital hubs in Leeds, Newcastle or Blackpool.

Each of our hubs is a modern, vibrant workplace that was designed for and by members of our digital community. Our central hubs have the best of the city on the doorstep, and we have a range of facilities across the sites from cafes, coffee shops and restaurants, to ping pong, a swimming pool, gym facilities and loads more.

Here we provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things. You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers.

We’re the UK’s biggest government department with over 80,000 diverse and brilliant people on our team. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.

Building Our Future
We believe the work we do really matters, so we’re serious about investing in your ability.

You’ll have access to a huge suite of training and learning opportunities to complement the new skills and experience you’ll acquire on the job.

You’ll share ideas with colleagues from across the tech community, and grow your skills via our coaching and mentoring programmes.
