Job description
DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We’re looking for a Lead Engineer to join our DWP Digital Team.
We create innovative, scalable digital solutions as part of DWP, the UK’s largest government department. DWP deliver products and services that are used by millions of people in the UK, every day and at key moments in their lives.
You’ll need domain experience, with hands-on experience of batch scheduling at scale and COBOL mainframe transactional systems. This is a hands-on engineering role, writing schedules that are fit for purpose, robust and secure.
Unlike some other engineering jobs, here what you do every day has an immediate and consequential impact,
You’ll straddle engineering and architecture, shaping DWP’s tech strategy, you’ll be responsible for the quality of the work and outcomes, defining standards, mentoring colleagues and embedding best practice in one of DWP’s most critical areas.
Duties. Work. Projects.
You’ll join us as Lead Engineer for DWP’s Benefit Payment Service platform, supporting re-platformed VME services for a number of the DWP’s most critical citizen payment applications.
It’s stuff that absolutely can’t fall over. We can’t get it wrong.
Your primary responsibility is for the enterprise scale batch scheduling service. Our batch processes are significant, in scale and importance. For example, the Jobseeker Allowance Payment Service has 4968 batch suites and 29,592 batch processes.
You will work alongside and mentor our platform software engineers, redesigning highly complex, predominantly batch-based services ensuring integrity and safeguarding the delivery of £100+ billion of payment to over 20 million citizens.
You’ll maintain these existing services, and you’ll also lead the design of the new, enhanced re-platforming, where you’ll closely with other experts from our architecture and engineering communities.
The Tech Stack is predominantly comprised of:
- COBOL
- Oracle DB
- Tuxedo
- Java running on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform utilising Autosys to provide the batch scheduling capability.
Your Essential Skills
- Software engineering, frameworks and languages (e.g. COBOL, MicroFocus COBOL, SCL, Java), tools and best practice.
- Architecture design and modelling techniques, patterns, tools and standards, especially in relation to batch architecture.
- Application architecture, frameworks, technologies (e.g. Autosys, COBOL, MicroFocus COBOL, SCL, Java), tools and best practice.
- Integration architecture, frameworks, technologies, tools and best practice, including software messaging.
- Relational database design/modelling, technologies, design patterns, tools and best practice e.g. Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL.
- Leading and developing technical teams and implementations.
Details. Wages. Perks.
You’ll join us in your choice of our brilliant digital hubs in Manchester, Blackpool or Newcastle. Find out more about our hubs here: https://careers.dwp.gov.uk/our-locations/
We also have all the tools and tech we need to enable our people to work flexibly, and many of us are working remotely at the moment due to COVID-19.
We offer competitive salary up to £73,325, a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions worth over 27%, and a generous leave package. We also have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:
- Flexible working and family friendly policies
- Volunteering and charitable giving
- Discounts and savings on shopping, fun days out and more
- Interest-free loans to buy a bike or a season ticket, so it’s even easier for you to get to work and start making a difference
