Job description
If you’re creative with a passion for learning new things, want to be empowered to make decisions and challenge the norm, and want to bring your ideas to a MASSIVE digital challenge then you’ll love it here. And we’d love to hear from you.
We’re looking for an experienced senior level Digital Project Manager to join DWP’s Digital Workplace project and become a key part of one of the UK’s biggest and most high-profile digital transformation programmes, a once-in-a-generation tech-driven reform of government products and services.
What is Digital Workplace?
It’s big. Over the last two years diverse DWP Digital teams have established Digital Workplace, an agile and multi-disciplinary service that supports over 84,000 employees, using more than 150 distributed cloud applications and operating out of more than 800 UK sites.
And we’re powering an even bigger digital transformation with a portfolio of digital products and services used by more than 20 million people across the UK.
It’s evolving. So far we’ve moved all of our systems to hybrid hosting, removing the constraints of previous large outsourced IT contracts, modernising our legacy infrastructure and stabilising service performance.
We are improving communication and collaboration, with a mixture of new hardware including mini-PCs, Surface Pro laptops and a growing mobile phone network. By upgrading our software with the latest versions of Office 365, Skype for Business and our rebooted staff intranet we’re making sure our people have the right tools and the latest professional digital skills. And we’ll keep evolving to meet the needs of our teams.
It’s really important we get it right. DWP deliver world-class digital solutions which touch the lives of millions of people, including our friends, neighbours and some of the most vulnerable people in our society. We’re creating a better working environment and experience for the people behind those solutions to ensure they stay equipped, motivated, informed and engaged.
You and your role
As our Lead Digital Project Manager, you’ll be a confident project manager, a capable planner and you’ll find ways to make processes work. You’re a strategic thinker capable of translating complex and conflicting analyses into clear communications.
A creative leader, you’ll build strong relationships and use your experience of making tech infrastructure projects happen to help us deliver the critical Product Development strand of our Digital Workplace project.
We’ll give you the space and autonomy to do your job. You’ll be an integral and flexible part of a small multidisciplinary team with end-to-end ownership of change, live service, strategy and architecture.
As Lead Digital Project Manager for DW’s Product Development Unit you will manage the end-to-end delivery of programmes or projects, ensuring viability and value. You will set the pace in a complex stakeholder and supplier environment. You’ll set the standards for project management practices, defining ways of working, and act as mentor and leader to the wider digital project management community.
You’ll do all this in business critical areas where the impact is highest. We need to deliver safely and minimise impact on our users to make sure the people who need to access DWP services continue to get the best possible service and experience when they need it most.
What are we looking for?
- You can deliver projects & products using agile project management methodologies (such as Scrum, Kanban), learning & iterating frequently.
- You have experience in dealing with large, sensitive, digital programmes or projects in fast paced agile environment where many complex factors have required strategies for dealing with ambiguity and change.
- You have experience in dealing with product lifecycles and coordinating multiple product areas, overseeing development and deployment along with process improvement and governance of infrastructure and foundation Digital services.
- You have experience of managing suppliers in an outsource scenario, and of moving away from outsource arrangements towards a self-sufficiency model at a scale similar to DWP.
- You can lead cross-functional teams comprising of Digital and non-Digital functions and experts (including Estates, HR, Finance, and operations). With experience of leading such initiatives to deliver a complex business, rather than purely technical, outcome.

You’ll join our team in Manchester. In our brilliant new Manchester hub we have the best of the city on our doorstep, with loads of great places nearby to meet, eat or to soak up a bit of culture.
