Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.

We’re looking for a Lead Solution Architect to be one of DWP Digital’s growing community of experts and join the Benefit Payment Service Platform team that is working across a number of re-platformed VME services, in multi-disciplinary agile teams.

DWP currently has an enormously ambitious and challenging agenda, often working in partnership with the private and voluntary sector. We provide services and support to over 20 million people and are responsible for over 730 million benefit payment transactions each year.

We’re living in extraordinary times, with unprecedented need for DWP products and services in our communities. So it’s never been more important for us to hire people like you, with the expert skills and values we need to power this once-in-a-generation digital transformation.

With our users at the heart of everything we do, together we’ll make our services easier and faster to access, quicker and more efficient to develop, more scalable, and more available to the people who need them.

Duties. Work. Projects.
The Benefit Payment Service platform supports services that provide a number of business critical payment applications. It enables greater alignment with DWP’s digital agenda and precepts, and allows greater flexibility in terms of data and making change far more responsive to operational needs.

You’re a leader.

You will lead the design of the new and re-platformed services, working closely with some of our Domain and Enterprise Architects to ensure alignment to the strategic Architecture Reference Model and Digital Blueprints.

You will deliver the technical and architecture design elements of the Benefit Payment projects, including the batch architecture for a number of critical business applications. And you’ll play a key role in leading discussions with senior stakeholders to create solution options and recommendations.

You’ll also work with engineering teams, and other Digital experts, to create VFM solution designs.

You will own the product architecture, developing product roadmaps and representing product designs at governance forums. Providing clear communication of architecture design and decision making, in order to gain approval to proceed with designs.

What skills and experience are we looking for?

•Architecture design and modelling techniques, patterns, tools and standards, especially in relation to batch architecture.

•Application architecture, frameworks, technologies (e.g. Micro Focus COBOL, SCL, Java), tools and best practice.

•Integration architecture, frameworks, technologies, tools and best practice, including software messaging.

•Software architecture, frameworks, technologies, tools and best practice.

•Relational database design/modelling, technologies, design patterns, tools and best practice e.g. Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL.

Where will you work?
You’ll join our team at one of our digital hubs in either Blackpool, Manchester or Newcastle.

We also all have the tech and tools we need to enable our people to work flexibly, and many of us are working remotely at the moment due to COVID-19.

*Please note that, under normal circumstances, this role will involve travel to other DWP digital hubs on a regular basis.

We provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things. You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers.

We’re the UK’s biggest government department with over 80,000 diverse and brilliant people on our team. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.
