Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We’re looking for a Lead Solution Architect to join DWP Digital’s growing community of experts. On our Citizen Information product delivery unit (PDU) you’ll be at the forefront of helping to deliver the DWP’s new strategic event driven architecture vision.

We’ll be defining and developing a number of new shared application products that enable secure, appropriate, and effective use of citizen data.

The strategy includes exploiting new data sources from across government and making better use of existing data to deliver efficiencies, reduce fraud and error, enable straight through processing, and ultimately provide improved user journeys.

DWP currently has an enormously ambitious and challenging agenda, often working in partnership with the private and voluntary sector. We provide services and support to over 20 million people and are responsible for over 730 million benefit payment transactions each year.

We’re living in extraordinary times, with unprecedented need for DWP products and services in our communities. So it’s never been more important for us to hire people like you, with the expert skills and values we need to power this once-in-a-generation digital transformation.

With our users at the heart of everything we do, together we’ll make our services easier and faster to access, quicker and more efficient to develop, more scalable, and more available to the people who need them.

Duties. Work. Projects.

A driving force for the Citizen Information solution architect team, you will design technical solutions (products and services) to meet user needs and align with DWP technical strategy and standards.

As a champion of solution communication, you will make sure the complex is simple to understand.

You’ll provide a consistent set of solution views. You’ll clearly communicate the design and construction of a solution to our stakeholders, and your decision-making process, to enable approval to proceed with the right design.

You’ll work with engineering teams, and other Digital colleagues, to create VFM solution designs, so you must own the product architecture, developing product roadmaps and representing product designs at governance forums.

You’ll build capability in our community and driving effective decisions and technology choices. An expert voice on Architecture you’ll provide expert advice to other Solution Architects, and support delivery teams with a blend of high technical and behavioural skills.

What skills and experience are we looking for?

• Architecture design and modelling techniques, patterns, tools and standards.

• Public cloud technologies, cloud hosting, container, and networking design patterns, tools and best practice (especially Amazon Web Services).

• Event-based architecture design, patterns (including pub-sub and data streaming), modelling techniques, tools and standards.

• Agile / DevOps delivery methodologies and best practice.

• Shaping and supporting technology initiatives, projects, programmes and portfolios.

• Conceptual, logical and physical data modelling and design.

Where will you work?
You’ll join our team at our digital hub in Newcastle.

Only a short Metro ride from the city centre, the hub has a modern, informal and collaborative working environment. Our facilities include two restaurants, catering pods and vending machines, sports facilities, cycle shelter, showers and Wudu washing facilities.

Have a closer look at the facilities via this link.

We also all have the tech and tools we need to enable our people to work flexibly, and many of us are working remotely at the moment due to COVID-19.

*Please note that, under normal circumstances, this role will involve travel to other DWP digital hubs on a regular basis.

Also, check out this link as Newcastle is the home to the GDS Academy, user experience lab and UX command centre.

We provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things. You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers.

We’re the UK’s biggest government department with over 80,000 diverse and brilliant people on our team. We are an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applications regardless of age, gender, race or sexuality.
