Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We’re looking for a Lead Technical Architect to join our growing community of experts. DWP is leading a once-in-a-generation programme of welfare reform and you’ll help drive forward a key part of one of the biggest and highest-profile digital transformation programmes in the world.

DWP currently has an enormously ambitious and challenging agenda, often working in partnership with the private and voluntary sector. We provide services and support to over 20 million people and are responsible for over 730 million benefit payment transactions each year.

We’re living in extraordinary times, with unprecedented need for DWP products and services in our communities. So it’s never been more important for us to hire people like you, with the expert skills and values we need to power our digital transformation.

With our users at the heart of everything we do, together we’ll make our services easier and faster to access, quicker and more efficient to develop, more scalable, and more available to the people who need them.

Duties. Work. Projects.
As Lead Technical Architect for our award-winning Intelligent Automation Garage (IAG) team, you will design technical solutions, products and services used by thousands of DWP colleagues and millions of people across the UK.

You’ll use Robotic Process Automation technologies like UI Path and Nice to meet the needs of these users and to deliver DWP’s ambition of world-class teams supporting world-class products and services.

Our IAG team has just passed a major milestone. Between April 2018 and the end of February 2020, five million DWP transactions were carried out using automation. These transactions include things like texts to customers, registering a claim on legacy systems, calculating deductions and validating fit note information against DWP held data. And we’re just getting started.

Here you’ll be challenged to blend your technical skills, in development, architecture and more, with your softer behavioral skills like leadership, relationship building and communication.

You are a champion of solution communication. You’ll create and provide a consistent view of solutions and their construction, making the complex simple to understand for delivery teams and stakeholders at all levels.

What skills and experience are we looking for?
• Architecture design and modelling techniques, patterns, tools and standards.

• Public cloud technologies, cloud hosting, container, and networking design patterns, tools and best practice (e.g. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform).

• Agile / DevOps delivery methodologies and best practice.

• Shaping and supporting technology initiatives, projects, programmes and portfolios.

• Knowledge and delivery experience of, Robotic Process Automation technologies e.g. UI Path, Nice.

Where will you work?
You’ll join our team with a base office at one of our Digital Hubs at either Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle OR Sheffield.

We have the tech and tools we need to enable our people to work flexibly, and many of us are working remotely at the moment due to COVID-19.

Please note – as C-19 restrictions ease, frequent travel to other DWP Digital hubs around the country will be required for this role plus an expectation that you will represent DWP Digital at events.

We provide the latest tech and tooling and foster a collaborative culture to help our agile, multidisciplinary teams think big and try new things. You will work alongside people who care passionately about public service, making a difference and delivering for our customers.
