In DWP Digital, our work enables some of the most vulnerable in society to access the support and services they need. As a Senior Data Scientist your contribution will help DWP develop digital products and services that work for millions uses. It’s especially critical in the extraordinary context created by COVID-19.
You’ll help us to convert raw data complex unstructured data into insights and recommendations so that DWP can shape real change to products and services used by millions and ultimately optimise digital services.

DWP is undertaking a major digital transformation programme and data science has an important role to play. We’re enabling better design of services, making them increasingly personalised to each individual’s circumstances and making big shifts in our effectiveness and efficiency.
You and your role…
You will join the Integrated Risk and Intelligence Service (IRIS), which is a collaboration between DWP Digital, Counter Fraud, Compliance and Debt (CFCD) and Cyber Resilience Centre (CRC).
IRIS is central to the DWP fraud and error strategy, and is radically transforming how the welfare system and those that use it are protected.
Senior Data Scientists in DWP Digital are actively involved in the technical development of analytical products. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver data science solutions, and act as a proactive link between operational, technical and analytical teams.
You’ll also be motivated to discover patterns in data and embed that insight in products that enable innovative ways to prevent and detect fraud and error, using techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing and network analytics.
What we expect from a Senior Data Scientist is a mature technical background and end to end cycle development work in data analysis hand in hand with technical leadership on solving problems and improvements on best practice.
You’ll have SQL Python/ Hadoop , Hive /Spark and have worked with supervised machine learning network and graph analytics.
You’ll have the flexibility to introduce new ideas and shape the technical direction and actively build machine learning models and trail machine in a live environment
You’ll be influential in the technical direction and management of stakeholders..
You’ll be involved in extremely valuable and rewarding work supporting and protecting the UK welfare system from organised crime and fraudulent activity.
What are we looking for?
You will need the skills, knowledge and experience to:
• Lead innovative data-driven solutions on large or complex datasets, including gathering and manipulating disparate data, applying analytical techniques and visualising results.
• Previous exposure in a range of data science techniques (e.g. classification, natural language processing and clustering) and associated limitations, with expertise in a number of techniques including theoretical basis and application.
• SQL and Python (or similar query-based or high level programming) experience to an advanced level as a prerequisite.
• Excellent written and oral communication, with ability to present complex analysis clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences, explain the implications of analytical evidence and provide recommendations.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and experience working with a range of people and teams to deliver results, and influencing decision-making.
• Delivery focused to create working solutions often and iteratively, applying Agile methodology and working in agile teams.
