As a Senior Front End Developer you will be a skilled Practitioner and a role model in software craftsmanship. Responsible for building elegant, accessible and scalable services that meet User needs. You will be responsible for ensuring best practices are adhered to across the department and guiding teams on how to deliver quality software products.
You will assist in the design of software products that make up citizen services in collaboration with Architecture and Engineering principles. With a focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality you will be accountable for the code your teams produce. You will have expert level knowledge of modern web development stacks, web standards, user experience, progressive enhancement, performance, accessibility, browser compatibility, tooling and pipelines.
Our Senior Front End Developers are responsible for writing quality test-driven code, using modern frameworks and development techniques within a test driven development (TDD) environment; our developers are also responsible for integration into the back-end infrastructure of a service. Responsible for adhering to and shaping the high standards to which DWP products and services are built, ensuring that the team uses modern web development techniques;
Other responsibilities include:
• Responsible for building accessible and performant interfaces across multiple devices and browsers;
• Responsible that the design and implementation of services is consistent, both internally and with the rest of wider UK government services;
• Responsible for Identifying and understanding technical and business constraints and is able to work within them whilst contributing back to existing government frameworks;
• Responsible for actively shaping the bigger picture and contribution to the definition and maintenance of standards;
• Responsible for Building, maintaining and sharing reusable libraries of code. Responsible for contributing to cross-government code libraries;
• Responsible for managing other developers work and development, establishing standards and promoting best practice
What skills, knowledge and experience will you need?
- Experience in front-end development, with detailed knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Web standards;
• experience of node.js Development;
• understanding of software design principles, including progressive enhancement;
• experience in building robust and accessible interfaces that work for as many users as possible, regardless of their needs;
• ability to quickly research and learn new programming tools and techniques;
• a systematic approach to solving problems;
• experience of using testing to validate solutions;
• understanding of agile environments and version control;
• an understanding of web security;
• understanding of technologies used for web applications, e.g HTTPS, JSON and REST.
