Job description

DWP. Digital with Purpose.
We’re looking for a talented Senior Service Designer to join our growing community of experts.

DWP is leading a once in a generation programme of welfare reform and you’ll help drive forward a key part of one of the biggest and highest-profile digital transformation programmes in the world.

Duties. Work. Projects.
DWP currently has an enormously ambitious and challenging agenda, often working in partnership with the private and voluntary sector. We provide services and support to over 20 million people and are responsible for over 730 million benefit payment transactions each year.

We’re living in extraordinary times, with unprecedented need for DWP products and services in our communities. So it’s never been more important for us to hire people like you, with the expert skills and values we need to power our digital transformation.

With our users at the heart of everything we do, together we’ll make our services easier and faster to access, quicker and more efficient to develop, more scalable, and more available to the people who need them.

You and your role:
As a Senior Service Designer, you are an expert practitioner with experience of large-scale and complex projects.
You will assure the quality of service design across teams and its alignment to departmental goals. You’ll use research, data and other evidence, and translate user needs into whole services (including the non-digital bits).

Working closely with product owners, programme directors and other senior stakeholders, you will help to build teams, solve problems and develop strategy.

You’re advocate for best practice in service design. You will lead on cross-government design projects and keep up to date with industry changes, helping to shape service design career paths.

What skills, knowledge and experience are we looking for?

•You are recognised as an industry specialist or expert capable of giving significant advice and guidance to others

•You have a proven track record of working from a digital perspective, including iterating service design for complex situations and difficult or technical problems and processes

•You are able to demonstrate experience of engaging multidisciplinary teams with a user-centred design process and of explaining design decisions in a way that other people understand

•You have substantial experience of putting forward the case for service design to senior stakeholders, policy colleagues and product owners

•You have led workshops with a focus on a user-centred design approach

•You have substantial experience of using user research and data to make design decisions

•You have taken the lead in setting design priorities across a number of departmental work areas

•You have experience of consulting regularly with senior stakeholders to provide analysis and recommendations

•You have demonstrable experience of understanding how your work fits into the wider context of the team and department

Where will you work?
You’ll join our team with a base office at one of our Digital Hubs at Manchester and Leeds.

We have the tech and tools we need to enable our people to work flexibly, and many of us are working remotely at the moment due to COVID-19.
