Job description
Do you want to be part of something really big? If you’re creative and curious to learn, want to be empowered to make decisions and challenge the norm, and want to bring BIG ideas to a MASSIVE digital challenge then you’ll love it here. And we’d love to hear from you.
DWP are looking for Senior Technical Architects with the skills required to fill a specialist data role to work with us on in a once-in-a-generation digital transformation. Our people work on projects that are revitalising and refreshing products and services that are used by millions of people every day to make them easier to use, and more efficient to deliver.
We know that better digital services in government will mean better public services. Using fresh ideas and leading edge technologies – and putting the user at the centre of everything we do – we create innovative digital solutions that make a difference to the lives of our 22 million users.
About the role
In DWP Solution Architects are responsible for supporting a team, blending leadership, architecture and development skills. Solution Architects need to have a breadth of understanding across a range of technical domains and a depth of knowledge and experience in at least one, but ideally many. Strong developmental and architectural skills are as vital as leadership or communication skills.
As a Solution Architect here you will, working with engineering teams, be responsible for supporting the design, development, delivery and maintenance of IT products and services. This will usually be for a project or a specific strand of a programme.
You will lead, deliver and support technical design of products and take the lead in ensuring high quality of technical design.
You will identify, capture, share and iterate architecture patterns to ensure consistent and coherent architecture design. You’ll Implement architecture patterns, and create reference architectures which will act as real-world, working examples of successful architecture design.
You’ll have to space and scope in your role to create solution options and recommendations. During project discovery and inception phases you can help drive decision making on the best solution design, as well as making technology choices for products.
About you
As a Senior Solution Architect you have deep knowledge in your field which you’ll use to help grow the technical architecture community here in DWP.
And here you will be able to share that knowledge and experience – blending technical knowledge, architecture and development skills. You’ll support the wider Tech Arch and digital communities as well as building high quality products and services.
You’ll relish the challenge of working for the UK’s largest government department, one with responsibility for over £170 billion worth of payments, and for products and services used by millions of people including some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
What skills, knowledge and experience are we looking for?
You need to have knowledge and experience of AT LEAST ONE OF the following:
-
- Oracle database design/modelling
- IBM DB2 database design/modelling
- Microsoft SQL Server database design/modelling

- Analytics and Big Data design/modelling
- Mainframe data and database design/modelling
It’s also great if you have knowledge and experience of the following…
- Agile / DevOps delivery methodologies
- Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) delivery methodologies
- Microservice and API-led architecture and integration design
- Application and integration architecture
- Cloud and infrastructure architecture
